philosophy of our research group

The Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab hosts a wide range of research projects led by undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and visiting scholars. Whether in the field, the lab, or both, our work is grounded in collaboration. All research activities are shaped by a shared commitment to the following core principles:

respect

We foster a culture of mutual respect—toward ourselves, our colleagues, and our shared work. This includes recognizing personal limits, asking for help when needed, and supporting others in doing the same. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and are committed to maintaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. Respect also means being mindful of one another’s privacy and personal boundaries.

COLLABORATION, KNOWLEDGE SHARING & involvement

At the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab, we value a culture of cooperation and mutual support. Students regularly share their expertise—whether it’s learning how to use lab instruments, applying analytical methods, or assisting with fieldwork—to foster a collaborative, non-competitive environment.
We are committed to open science. Sharing research findings through pre-prints on University of Waterloo platforms and distributing reprints to researchers without institutional access helps make our work more accessible and impactful.

Beyond the lab, students are encouraged to get involved in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability through committee work, which builds a strong academic community and lasting professional relationships. We also support participation in environmental initiatives and science outreach beyond the university, recognizing the importance of engaging with the broader public.

communication

Clear and respectful communication is essential to the success of our research group. Whether in person, online, or through written correspondence, open and transparent communication helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps our collaborative work on track.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are also vital for sharing scientific findings. In the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab, we support one another in preparing conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other professional outputs. We also encourage public outreach and the broader dissemination of our research through various media platforms—including press releases, interviews, and radio programs—to help connect our science with the wider community.
